Police Targeting Registered Bikes
06-Oct-2009
In a disturbing development we have received several reports of police specifically targeting registered trail bikes being ridden on gazetted trails and issuing defect notices for seemingly minor issues such as not having street legal tyres.
We are following up this issue to gain a better understanding of whether this is just a temporary blitz or the start of a broader harrassment campaign by the Police.
If the Police are unable to use sensible discretion and if they insist on trail bikes carrying indicators, mirrors and road-oriented tyres when ridden off-road then we will have to mount a campaign to broaden the concept of conditional registration such as the Recreational Registration used in Victoria.
At a time when we are urging riders to buy road registered bikes if they want to explore forest trails this hard-line approach by the Police is clearly not helpful.
We will update members as more information comes to hand.
