ORV Registration Price Increase

11-Sep-2015

If you own a bike, quad or side x side that is registered as an Off Road Vehicle, then you may have recently received a renewal notice from the Department of Transport.

The registration fee is shown as $15.00 - which represents a 150% increase on the previous fee.

Our understanding is that the Department of Transport has not yet obtained the full legal authority to apply this increased fee, and it may also be the case that the renewal notice is therefore not legally valid.  The increase in fee requires a change to the Control of Vehicles (Off Road Areas) Regulations 1979, and as of today no such change has been announced in the Government Gazette.

Payment is not due until 1st October, so you may want to consider delaying paying this registration until the issue of legal validity is resolved.

The RTRA's concerns are not so much about the price of ORV registration - more about the value that it delivers, the reasons for the increase, where the money is going and what it is being used for.

We will follow up on these questions, along with a couple of other things we would like you to know about the ORV Registration fee and the government agencies behind it, in a member email early next week.
